NEW YORK (AP) — The biggest and most successful drug launch in history was a Viagra tablet that finally made the world's biggest pharmaceutical company reach the market with a new blockbuster.
The Viagra tablet, which sold in about 6 million U. S. retail stores, was launched by Pfizer Inc. in 1998 and is now the world's best-selling erectile dysfunction drug. It will go on sale in 60 million U. stores nationwide, according to Pfizer.com, a site that tracks the number of prescriptions for more than 8 million prescriptions.
"It's a very exciting time right now," says David Katz, a spokesman for Pfizer. "We're having a great time."
Pfizer and its worldwide subsidiary, which makes Viagra and other drugs, have been fighting a legal battle over the launch. Last August, the U. Food and Drug Administration approved a long-range, three-year, three-fitside, five-year version of Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction that is currently only available on prescription in 50 countries.
Viagra, which was made available in the U. by Pfizer in 1998, has since become a big hit, with sales of about $1 billion a year in the U. S., according to research firm IMS Health. A report by Bloomberg magazine reported in October that Viagra sales were more than double the year it was approved for sale.
Pfizer says the move could help more than 40 million men worldwide suffering from erectile dysfunction, including U. residents who were unable to get or keep an erection for more than 30 minutes. Some of the Viagra sales are due to sales in Asia, where it was approved for sale. Pfizer says that its efforts to bring Viagra to the U. are focused on improving health, not making drugs on the market that could cause side effects.
Viagra has a "pro-growth" appeal, said Dr. Robert E. Menzel, who heads the Institute for Safe and Effective Medicines at the Albert Wood Medical Center in Philadelphia, who wrote the book on Pfizer's Viagra marketing. Menzel is also an associate professor of pharmacy science at Johns Hopkins University.
Sales of Viagra in the U. have nearly doubled since 1998, and Pfizer said it expects to launch 60 million Viagra prescriptions in 60 million retail stores by the end of the year. Pfizer hopes to market the drug in more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the company has no plans to market a version of Viagra in the U. and does not plan to change its marketing plan. Pfizer also does not plan to market the drug in Asia.
Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker, has already spent about $15 billion to market Viagra and other drugs since it launched the world's first drug. Pfizer says it is marketing Viagra for about 20 million U. men and will market it in 100 countries by the end of the year.

"We're going to focus on helping men who are experiencing ED who are not getting it," said Dr. Andrew Dudum, who oversees the research at Pfizer.
But Dr. John Hirsch of the New Jersey-based consulting firm Dr. John's, said the drugmaker is not planning to launch it in the U. because it had not yet made a firm decision about how to market it.
Dr. David Rosenblatt of Harvard Medical School, who is chief of a private practice in Massachusetts, said the company is working with its own marketing plan to launch Viagra in the U. in the first half of this year. He said he is hopeful that sales will reach half a million prescriptions by the end of the year.
"We have a lot of patients that are going through the side effects of Viagra, and they're not coming back to us," Rosenblatt said. "We've been working with Pfizer and it's been a lot of help.
